How to Read a Supplement Label

Two tubs sit side by side on the same shelf, at roughly the same price. One is markedly better than the other. Nothing on the front of either will tell you which.

The information you need is almost always printed on the pack. It is just printed in a language nobody teaches you. This guide teaches you that language.

It is not about our products. It works on any supplement, from any brand, bought anywhere. Take it into Boots. Take it to Amazon. Use it on us — the last chapter does exactly that, in public.

What you will learn

  • Why the ingredients order matters more than the front of the pack — and how reading three lines tells you most of what you need
  • The elemental weight trap — why 500 mg of magnesium citrate is nothing like 500 mg of magnesium, and how to spot the difference
  • What a ‘proprietary blend’ is hiding, and why an undisclosed split is an unknown quantity rather than a generous one
  • Extract ratios — what 10:1 actually means and why a missing ratio makes two products incomparable
  • The words that mean something and the many that do not — natural, high strength, clinically proven, pharmaceutical grade
  • Vegan, halal, kosher and allergens — where products most often fail the people who need them to be right
  • Six questions worth asking any supplement brand, including this one

The awkward chapter

Part Four turns the whole thing on our own range. Every product we sell, with its additives, its sweeteners, its allergens and the things that might rule it out for you. Two entries are visibly less clean than the rest. They are still in the table.

We would rather lose a sale to an informed decision than win one to a vague label.

Curious what is in ours? The MenoVeil Range Guide sets out every product we sell, ingredient by ingredient.

This guide is about reading and comparing labels. It contains no advice about what you should take or what any ingredient does in the body. Food supplements are intended to complement a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle, and are not a substitute for either. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking prescribed medication or managing a health condition, speak to your GP or pharmacist before starting any supplement.

FAQs

The European Food Safety Authority reviews the scientific evidence behind nutrition claims and maintains an official register of approved claims (Regulation 432/2012). These are the only claims UK supplement brands can legally make. Every claim on a MenoVeil product uses this exact authorised wording — for example, "vitamin B6 contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue." It's a system that protects consumers from marketing overreach.

All three are highly-absorbable forms of magnesium bound to different amino acids. Glycinate is gentle on the stomach and often chosen for evening use. Malate supports energy metabolism. Taurate is favoured for cardiovascular support. Our Triple Magnesium Complex combines all three at 2,453mg total, providing 375mg elemental magnesium — 100% of your daily NRV.

KSM-66 is the most extensively studied form of ashwagandha extract on the market — a full-spectrum, root-only extract standardised to at least 5% with anolides. Unlike cheaper leaf-and-root blends, it retains the full profile of active compounds. Our Ashwagandha Botanical Complex delivers 400mg of KSM-66 per capsule, joined by cordyceps, ginseng and maca.

Our Glow Collagen+ uses hydrolysed marine collagen peptides sourced from sustainable wild-caught fish. Hydrolysed means it's broken down into small peptides for better absorption. Marine collagen is favoured over bovine for its type-1 collagen content — the most abundant type in skin, hair and nails.

Functional mushrooms — like reishi, lion's mane, chaga, maitake and shiitake — have a long history of traditional use and are increasingly popular in modern wellness. Our Organic Mushroom Complex is certified organic by the Soil Association and combines five varieties, plus organic astragalus and acerola cherry (a natural source of vitamin C).

D3 (cholecalciferol) is the same form your skin produces from sunlight and is more effective at raising blood levels than D2 (ergocalciferol). Traditionally D3 is sourced from lanolin, but our vegan D3 & K2 Drops use plant-derived D3 from lichen — a rare vegan-friendly source. K2 (as MK-7) works alongside D3 for bone support.

Isoflavones are naturally-occurring plant compounds found in soya and red clover. They've been used traditionally in midlife wellness for generations. Our Daily Balance combines red clover and soya isoflavones with wild yam, sage and bamboo — a botanical foundation blend.

Yes. Every batch is produced in UK facilities certified to GMP and ISO 9001 standards, with full traceability from raw ingredient to finished bottle. Ingredients are quality-tested at multiple stages — identity, potency, purity and contamination screening — before being approved for use.
